Electro-Motivie Diesel Biodiesel

EMD and NS Launch Extensive Biodiesel Fuel Test Program

La Grange, IL - Norfolk Southern Railway Co. and Electro-Motive Diesel, Inc. announced that they are partnering to conduct testing on the use of biodiesel fuel for locomotive applications.

Biodiesel fuel, a renewable resource, has been shown to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, hydrocarbons and particulate matter, while essentially eliminating exhaust emissions of sulfur oxides and sulfates.

“Norfolk Southern is committed to exploring ways to conduct our business using renewable resources,” said Blair Wimbush, Norfolk Southern’s vice president real estate and corporate sustainability officer. “Our work with EMD will hopefully result in an environmentally-sensitive, domestically-produced fuel option for the rail industry.”

This will be one of the most extensive testing programs to date on the use of biodiesel fuel for locomotives.

  • Eight SD70M-2 locomotives and two MP15 switchers manufactured by EMD and owned and operated by NS will be utilized for this test.

  • The locomotives will run in regular service for a period of 9 to 11 months to facilitate evaluation of performance over a wide range of operating and environmental conditions.

  • The biodiesel blends utilized will range from B10 to B20.

The locomotives and components will be evaluated throughout the process for effect on emissions, fuel consumption, performance and durability.

“This demonstration is a part of EMD’s work in further reducing emissions and improving the efficiency of our locomotives and environmentally-friendly two-stroke engine.” said John S. Hamilton, President and CEO of Electro-Motive. “We look forward to working with NS on efforts to positively impact the environment and decrease U.S. dependence on foreign oil.”
