EMD Launches New Traction Motor MRO Facility

Electro-Motive Diesel officially launched its new facility for the maintenance, rebuild, and overhaul of traction motors and other electrical equipment, with a ribbon cutting ceremony officiated by the Governor of the State of San Luis Potosi, and attended by over 200 dignitaries and guests.

San Luis Potosi, Mexico - Electro-Motive Diesel, Inc. today held a ribbon cutting ceremony at its new traction motor maintenance, rebuild, and overhaul (MRO) facility in San Luis Potosi Mexico. The operation has begun delivering the world-class, high-performance products expected by its railroad customers, becoming an important element in the Company’s continued global growth and investment in its future business.

Honored guests included: Dr. Fernando Toranzo Fernández, Governor of the State of San Luis Potosi; Miguel Cardoza Mora, Secretary of Labor; C. Martha Elena Meade Espinosa, Secretary of the Economy; and Cecilia Sanchez, Director of the Tres Naciones Industrial Park.

In his remarks, John S. Hamilton, President and CEO of Electro-Motive Diesel said, “This facility represents a significant step for EMD. By performing traction motor remanufacturing for EMD customers throughout the Western Hemisphere – as part of our broader strategy to support our global customers with EMD facilities – it will ensure that their locomotives remain highly reliable.” And speaking directly to the new EMD San Luis Potosi employees he said, “You are now part of the rich EMD tradition. We are proud to have such a great team on board, helping EMD to extend the history of market leadership we established in 1922.”

Ossama Hassan, Senior Vice President and COO of EMD described how the unique combination of proprietary OEM technology, a dedicated group of employees, and the investment of EMD resources is already contributing to the early success of the new SLP operation. He also recognized the strong support and partnership of the site developer, Grupo Ayusa; the Tres Naciones Industrial Park; and the San Luis Potosi Chamber of Commerce in achieving all of the planning and construction goals – opening the new facility on schedule.

In offering his congratulatory message, Dr. Fernando Toranzo Fernández, Governor of the State of San Luis Potosi said, “The trust shown by the Electro-Motive Diesel investment in our State is a reflection of the confidence of other investors towards our nation as a business destination. It is also clear evidence of the beginning economic recovery in Mexico, generating increased employment and well-being for its citizens.” He added, “With nearly ninety years as a leading supplier of diesel-electric locomotives around the world, I am glad that EMD has chosen to share its success with us. Welcome to San Luis Potosi.”

The new EMD facility occupies over 110,000 square feet. Operations began in March 2010 and at full capacity are expected to employ over 150 people. The building is located in the Tres Naciones Industrial Park, which provides the infrastructure for over forty industries from eleven countries.

The city of San Luis Potosi is the capital and most populous city in the state of San Luis Potosi and lies at the crossroads of distribution, commercialization, and import-export activities between its cities, borders and ports. It is also considered one of the most important railway centers in Mexico, due both to the number of rail-oriented workshops and the combined length of installed track.
