EMD is committed to Biodiesel fuel technologies and reducing particulate matter and greenhouse gases.

Biodiesel fuel is produced from renewable sources such as Jatropha seeds grown in India, and can be blended with diesel fuel for use in EMD locomotives.

EMD has approved the 710 Engine to run on a 5% biodiesel blend, reducing particulate matter and greenhouse gases.

EMD is also working with other railways to evaluate higher blends of biodiesel. High blends of biodiesel may require engine modifications, which is one more way that EMD is supporting the efforts of the Indian Railways to develop and use biodiesel fuel in their existing locomotives.
