Britain's Royal Train to be pulled by Electro-Motive Locomotive
Class 67 diesel locomotive does the job of two older units

LaGrange, Illinois - English Welsh & Scottish Railway (EWS), Britain's largest rail operator, has unveiled a new dedicated locomotive responsible for pulling the Royal Train. This class 67 diesel locomotive, built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division (EMD), has been painted in the official Royal Train color, Royal Claret, and is named The Queen's Messenger.

According to Curt Swenson, Director of Market Development & Communications for Electro-Motive, this locomotive is one of thirty class 67 locomotives provided to EWS by Electro-Motive. This 3000-hp, 4-axle locomotive model uses Electro-Motive's 12-cylinder 710 engine and EM2000 locomotive control computer, both of which are also used in North American passenger locomotives. The class 67 locomotives are capable of 125 mph. They use a dual-cab carbody and high speed bogies provided by one of Electro-Motive's European associates.

The new dedicated locomotive from Electro-Motive is replacing two British class 47 locomotives. Swenson noted that although the Royal Train requires only one locomotive, it is symbolic of the market success that Electro-Motive has achieved in Britain and elsewhere in Europe with highly reliable locomotives. In the past six years, EWS and other rail operators in Europe have taken delivery of more than 400 of Electro-Motive's class 66 locomotives. The 6-axle class 66 locomotives, which are geared for freight operations, also use 710 engines and EM2000 computer systems as well as Electro-Motive's patented self-steering radial bogies.
