Our Heritage

Electro-Motive was the originator of diesel-electric motive power for the railways. The company was formed in 1922 and supplied the first ever diesel-powered shunters. In 1934 EMD introduced the original lightweight passenger locomotive for transcontinental use, and in 1939 the company pioneered diesel power for mainline freight trains. Since then EMD has led the industry in technical innovation, sales, and satisfied customers.
