We all know that being satisfied at our jobs
is about more than the actual work we perform on a daily basis.
It’s about the co-workers with whom we spend most of our waking
hours. It’s about the company to which we commit to dedicate our
very best efforts. It’s about the outlets provided by that organization
or the surrounding community that make us feel that there is life
beyond work. Sure, EMD is proud to offer a terrific wage and benefits
package to employees. But we’re just as proud to offer a wide range
of extracurricular and community-based activities that provide “something
for everyone.”
SLYDER BOOFAY
 |
For over 20 years, EMD employees have turned out for the
annual "Slyder Boofay" -- a unique and tasty breakfast
that raises funds for a different local charity each year.
An organizing committee at Electro-Motive identifies a recipient
charity, solicits contributions from employees, and then hosts
a "Slyder" hamburger breakfast to thank contributors.
The monetary difference between the contributions and the
cost of the "Slyders" is donated to the local charity.
Since the start of the "Slyder Boofay" in 1983,
over $57,000 has been donated to local charities, and Electro-Motive
employees have consumed 25,600 "Slyders"!

COMPUTER RECYCLING HELPS
AREA SCHOOLS, ENVIRONMENT
When its LaGrange offices were scheduled for a computer upgrade,
Electro-Motive found a way to help local schools and keep old hardware
out of the waste stream at the same time. EMD partnered with the
Chicago-based Computers For Schools (CFS) Foundation to participate
in a unique computer recycling program.
Electro-Motive provided more than 700 office workstations to the
CFS Foundation, which accepts donations of used computers from area
businesses and individuals. The Foundation repairs, updates, and
sells the hardware on a cost recovery basis to schools with limited
resources for technology. To date, more than 80 schools in the Chicago
area have received EMDs refurbished equipment.
The yearlong project was capped off with a personal computer recycling
drive held at EMD. During the three-day event, Electro-Motive employees,
retirees, local UAW offices, and area businesses donated used hardware
to be given a second life in area classrooms. The following weekend,
EMD co-sponsored a regional computer collection day for the general
public hosted by the CFS Foundation. Held in the parking lot of
Chicagos United Center, the event drew individuals and businesses
from the greater Chicago metropolitan area. More than 80,000 pounds
of computer hardware was donated, including hundreds of pieces collected
the previous week at EMD.
