1972

A half a century ago, our budding young company was founded -- a company that would revolutionize the railroad industry. Proud of our past but not resting on our laurels, we look toward the future and introduce the "Dash-2" locomotive -- a third generation in rail motive power that would become the backbone of the North American railroad fleet.

1974

Three years after it begins operations to provide a viable rail passenger system for the United States, Amtrak takes delivery of its first SDP40F passenger locomotive.

1975

Electro-Motive reassumes responsibility for the direct sales of its products worldwide from General Motors Overseas Operations.

1978

EMD reaches the 100 million horsepower milestone with the production of a 16-cylinder diesel engine for delivery to the Burlington Northern in a new SD40-2 locomotive.

The 5,000th EMD marine diesel engine is put into service.

1979 The next-generation "50 Series" locomotive is introduced, incorporating a new wheel adhesion control system.
