1981

Over 10,000 EMD diesel engines have now been placed in service in the Power, Marine and Industrial markets.


1982

The first 8-cylinder turbocharged locomotive --- the GP15T --- is introduced in the United States.


1983

Another historic milestone is reached --- the production of the 50,000th GM powered locomotive.


1984

EMD introduces a new 710 engine and the 60 Series microprocessor controlled locomotive.


1985 Today, March 27th, we mark our 50th anniversary celebrating our LaGrange plant ground breaking ceremony of March 27, 1935.
1986 A new concept and a new business is born --- Contract Maintenance.

EMD agrees to lease locomotive "Power-By-The-Hour" to the Burlington Northern Railroad and be responsible for locomotive performance and maintenance.


1987 Another new opportunity and another new business. EMD begins leasing locomotives to the U.S. railroads as a means to help our valued customers meet peak traffic volume demands.
1988 General Motors consolidates its Electro-Motive locomotive assembly operations with GM Diesel Division of Canada.

EMD creates a worldwide distributor network to market and service EMD non-rail products.


1989 EMD marks the 50th anniversary of the historic FT103 demonstration tour.
