EMD Sells 10 Class 66 Locomotives to
Porterbrook Leasing Company

General Motors' Electro-Motive Diesel today announced the sale of ten Class 66 locomotives to Porterbrook Leasing Company for use in continental Europe - a further demonstration of the success of EMD's Class 66 in the European marketplace.

These Class 66s (known in continental Europe as Series 66) will be delivered from the end of 2001: eight will be equipped for German operation and two will be equipped for operation in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. These locomotives may also be used within Luxembourg.

Scott Garman General Motors' Electro-Motive Diesels' Director of Locomotive Business Development for Europe said,

"The demand and potential for the Class 66 in the European marketplace is extremely strong. It is essential that we are able to respond quickly to deliver locomotives at short notice for our customers. That is what the market needs."

"It is good news that Porterbrook shares EMD's commitment to Europe. We believe that this mutual focus on customer needs lies at the heart of our working partnership. Obviously we both anticipate that the locomotives will be leased quickly and look forward to further deals in the near future."

This announcement follows hot on the heels of EMD's sale of Class 66s to HGK (Häfen und Güterverkehr Köln AG) last month. EMD's product is ideal for the European railway market, with full cross-border capability.

Neil Bennett, International Business Manager at Porterbrook Leasing Company commenting on the deal said:

"There is no shortage of customer interest and that is why we have purchased these Class 66s from EMD. Like EMD we believe that meeting customer delivery lead times is crucial. Increasingly operators can require locomotives within four to six months - all along the line we need to be able to act quickly. We have every confidence in EMD's Class 66's from both a financial and performance perspective. Given the discussions we are having with numerous customers across Europe, we envisage further high demand for the Class 66."

EMD voiced its commitment to full scale interoperability within the European rail market earlier this year and has opened an office in Germany to support its European expansion. It has received certification in Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden and hopes to announce Belgian certification within a few weeks. The Class 66 is also currently approved to operate in Norway - awaiting type certification.
