Electro-Motive Receives Governor's
Pollution Prevention Award
LaGrange, Illinois - Electro-Motive has received the 2004 Illinois
Governor's Pollution Prevention Award for its commitment to pollution
prevention through waste reduction and product substitution.
Electro-Motive was recognized for efforts to recycle materials
generated at its LaGrange facility and to minimize environmental
impacts of substances used in manufacturing processes. Materials
sent for recycling include used oils, pallets, scrap wood, cardboard,
paper and computers. The facility has reduced emissions through
the use of reformulated engine paint, implemented the use of lead-free
solder for maintenance activities, substituted more environmentally
friendly products for those formerly used in cutting processes and
engine and tool cleaning, reduced the volume of water in industrial
sludge, increased the volume of oil sent for recycling, and donated
more than 500 used office computers to a not-for-profit organization
for refurbishing.
"The projects honored by the Governor's Pollution Prevention
Awards show that Electro-Motive is working hard at being a good
steward of the environment," said George VanderVelde, Director
of the Waste Management & Research Center (WMRC), a division
of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. "Through product
substitution, implementation of an Environmental Management System,
and aggressive recycling, Electro-Motive is proving that what is
good for the environment also is good for business."
The WMRC reviewed Illinois businesses and organizations for their
pollution prevention efforts. Electro-Motive was one of four businesses
to receive the award in the Large Industry category.
"We are proud of the efforts of our UAW-GM employees that
led to this recognition," said Nat Harris, Electro-Motive Director
of LaGrange Operations. "Our commitment to the environment
continues and is consistent with our beliefs and values on being
a good corporate citizen."
