EMD Wins AC Traction Diesel-Electric
Locomotive Kit Sales for Australia
Downer EDI awarded locomotive contracts
for SCT Logistics
LaGrange, Illinois - Downer
EDI Limited (Downer EDI) today announced that its Rail division,
EDI Rail
has signed contracts with SCT
Logistics (SCT) for the design, supply and maintenance of 11
new locomotives. The value of the contracts is approximately $75
million.
Under the terms of the agreement, EDI
Rail will supply 11 mainline AC traction diesel-electric locomotives,
and provide maintenance services over a ten year period. The locomotives
are scheduled to commence service progressively from the second
half of 2007.
CEO of EDI
Rail, Guy Wannop said, This is a significant win for EDI
Rail and once again highlights our expertise in the full life cycle
of locomotives, from design through to supply, commissioning and
maintenance. The contracts follow current and past orders with clients
where we not only supply the locomotives, but more importantly we
provide a strong, long term maintenance capability.
The EMD powered locomotives (GT46C-AC model) will be used by SCT
to haul mixed freight from Melbourne to Perth on the east-west standard
gauge network.
The GT46C-AC locomotive will be Australias first mainline
AC traction locomotive and builds on the success of Australias
first AC traction narrow gauge locomotive. The SCT locomotives will
provide 4,300 tractive horsepower and incorporate the latest technology
including semi steer bogies, electronic fuel injection, microprocessor
control, electronic brakes and screen based instrument display.
CEO of SCT Logistics,
Mr. Geoff Smith, said, SCT Logistics had been researching
the locomotive market both in Australia and abroad for the past
two years to ensure that we were acquiring the most efficient and
technologically advanced locomotives which were best suited for
SCTs application.
This acquisition will ensure that SCT
Logistics can continue to provide rail competition in Australia
and expand its services onto other national rail corridors.
Executive General Manager Freight Services of EDI
Rail, Danny Broad said, Once again we are proud to be
associated with our technology partner EMD. It is a proven partnership
that complements the skills within EDI Rail and allows us to continually
provide our customers with the most efficient and advanced technology
available.
