Starting in 2007 the Euro 4000 will be the most powerful diesel-electric
locomotive available in Europe. The Euro 4000 features a Co-Co
axle configuration, two cabs and AC/DC traction. EMD's service-proven
and fuel efficient 16-710 diesel engine with electronic fuel injection
serves to the power the locomotive to an impressive 4,250 HP DIN-all
while meeting European Union Stage IIIA exhaust emissions regulations
and a 20.5 metric tonne axle load.
With its highly efficient traction system, the locomotive will
be capable of hauling heavier and longer trains, increasing operator
competitiveness and efficiency. Thanks to the higher operational
speeds, the Euro 4000 will circulate with other traffic, such
as passenger trains, ensuring that constant speeds can be maintained
on all lines. Both freight and passenger versions of this locomotive
will be available.
The Euro 4000 will be built by Vossloh España in Valencia
Spain utilizing the same EMD core components used in thousands
of service-proven North American locomotives.
