Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) is purchasing 27 model SD70M locomotives from EMD. The SD70M is the most reliable diesel-electric locomotive in North America, and now EMD is adapting it for use in demanding mining service in Brazil. In fact, over 1,500 SD70Ms are currently in service in North America. CVRD will place the new fleet into service in Carajas, located in Northern Brazil, to increase production in hauling iron ore to meet rising world demand.
To accommodate the broad track gauge, EMD has designed a new 1600 mm bogie for the SD70M. Each unit will be equipped with distributed power and the CCBII electronic air brake system. The SD70M is rated at 4,300 THP and is equipped with EMD's proven 16-710 engine.
